How to choose Line Pipe

What is Line Pipe

Line pipe is a type of pipe that is manufactured from high strength carbon steel. It is typically made according to metallurgical specifications that were developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API). Line pipe can be used to build pipelines that transport a variety of resources including natural gas, oil, petroleum, and water. This pipe is available in a variety of diameters ranging from 2 inches to 48 inches. Because line pipe needs to withstand high pressures, there are important tests done on line pipe to ensure it meets all of the requirements of steel chemistry, strength, toughness, and dimensional characteristics. Using line pipe that meets the set criteria will ensure safe and reliable pipeline service.

The classification of the Line Pipe

There are two types of line pipe, one is welding steel tube and the other is seamless steel pipe. Both have different uses.

Welding steel pipe

Welding steel pipe has the steel pipe joint, which is used the steel belt or steel plate material through the bending deformation into round, then welded into shape.

Welded steel pipe are widely used in conveying water, sewage, gas, air, heating, steam and other low-pressure fluid and other uses, which can meet customer requirements. The special specifications welded pipe can be processed according to user requirements.

Seamless steel pipe

Seamless steel pipe is a kind of economical steel with lighter weight. There are many uses for the seamless steel pipe today. It is used for transmitting gases and liquids at high volumes and very high speeds. It is a seamless pipe means that there are no surrounding joints and part from transporting water and other liquids, it can also be used for mechanical applications like drilling. Because it is lighter and does not take as much material to manufacture as the solid bars of the same size, it makes it the most economical option for many operations.

Comparison for two Line Pipe

The main advantages of welded tubes and pipes are their lower inherent cost, narrower tolerances for wall thickness, concentricity (OD/ID) and internal surfaces that can be checked prior to manufacture. They also allow larger diameters and longer lengths to be produced. In addition to faster delivery times for welded tubes, there is the added advantage of lower economical risk.

Despite many advantages with welded tubes, seamless tubes are still widely used and the two products generally complement each other. More commonly it is subjective reasons such as habit, limited experience and lack of trust in longitudinal welds that leads to seamless being chosen. When comparing seamless tubes to welded, the following arguments are often used as benefits of seamless tubes: Not having a heat-affected zone, better corrosion resistance, more homogeneous grain structure, no extra weld integrity testing, no problem with weld-seam orientation and no need for pressure de-rating.

The specifications of the line pipe

The thickness requirements for line pipe are determined by the maximum operating pressure required for a pipeline. This is based on published standards and federal regulations. Following proper safety regulations when selecting and installing line pipe, will ensure proper pipeline operation and prevent dangerous or hazardous situations.

Transportation of oil and gas pipeline is divided into the main pipeline and branch pipeline and city pipeline net, the main pipeline is usually specifications for 406 ~ 1219mm, the wall thickness is 10 ~ 25mm, grade X42 ~ X80; regional common specification pipelines and pipeline for the city for 114 ~ 700mm 6 ~ 20mm, wall thickness, steel grade X42 ~ X80.
